Women in Training to Sponsor President’s Volunteer Service Award for Central Alabama

Applications for the 2023-2024 award year are due by April 14, 2023

Women In Training, Inc. is now accepting applications for the President’s Volunteer Service Award (PVSA), a prestigious honor the President of the United States bestows for outstanding volunteer service in communities throughout the nation.

The award is presented by certifying organizations to individuals and groups that have demonstrated a sustained commitment to volunteer service in their community over the course of a 12-month period, or a lifetime. As an approved certifying agency for Montgomery and surrounding areas, WIT will assess award eligibility and present the award to honorees during its annual meeting on July 27, 2024.

"Volunteers are the pillars of our community,” said Kimberly Brown, Women in Training Board Member and Chairwoman of the WIT-President's Volunteer Service Award Committee. “We are proud to sponsor this distinguished award on behalf of the Office of the President of the United States to recognize our dedicated volunteers in Montgomery and surrounding areas.”

Women in Training, Inc.’s 12-month award cycle begins April 1 of each year. WIT is currently accepting applications for volunteer service completed between April 1, 2023 – March 31, 2024. Applications are due by April 14, 2024.

Awards levels include bronze, silver, gold, and the President’s Lifetime Achievement, based on the number of service hours completed. The President’s Lifetime Achievement Award honors those who have a minimum of 4,000 volunteer hours documented by a certifying organization. Each honoree receives a letter of commendation signed by the President of the United States, and a personalized certificate, official pin, or medallion.

President George W. Bush’s Council on Service and Civic Participation founded the President’s Volunteer Service Award in 2003 through an executive order. It has continued under each administration to honor the nation’s most exceptional volunteers who devote their time and talents to address some of the country’s toughest challenges. The program is managed by AmeriCorps through a partnership with Points of Light. Certifying organizations have been granted authority to verify a volunteer’s service hours and distribute awards.

WIT presented its inaugural Presidential Volunteer Service Award to Laurie Edmondson and Air Force Master Sergeant Ashley Marshall earlier this year.

Along with Kimberly Brown, other volunteer leaders on the PVSA Committee are Tiffany Carnell of Montgomery Public Schools and Ashley Levitt of the Southern Poverty Law Center.
